All instruments, including kalimba, need maintenance just like humans do.
Here are some tips to keep your kalimba in good condition:
1. Just like any other instruments made of wood, do not leave the kalimba in direct sunlight, rain or wetness. Since the inside of kalimba is usually not painted, it could get damp and be out of tone.
2. The keys are made of steel. You can use a cleaning cloth to wipe them after playing, or regularly put a little bit of vaseline (petroleum) jelly on the bottom tips of the keys to prevent rust, which also helps your fingers play smoothly on the keys.
